Unfortunately there are no good treatments for this disease. It is only the very rare person who is identified very early on in the course of mesothelioma AND is healthy enough to undergo surgery who can be potentially cured. The surgery involved (called an extrapleural pneumonectomy) is a very morbid and difficult procedure performed by only a few dedicated chest surgeons across the country. Chemotherapy and radiation may temporarily slow the growth of mesothelioma but in general do not prolong life. It is a horrible disease and if you know someone with it my prayers are with them.

The treatment program for mesothelioma depends on many factors, including: the stage of the cancer, where the cancer is, how far the cancer has spread, how the cancer cells look under the microscope and the patient’s age and desires.

There are three traditional kinds of treatment for patients with malignant mesothelioma:

•Surgery (taking out the cancer)
•Chemotherapy (using drugs to fight the cancer)
•Radiation Therapy (using high-dose x-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells)
