Laser Eye Surgery Astigmatism

Posted on | July 3, 2010 | No Comments

Laser Eye Surgery AstigmatismAstigmatism is a disease condition where there is a refractive error in the eye of the affected person. This error in the eyesight can lead to a blurring of the vision. The cause of this is that the cornea which is also called the lens has a irregular curvature. In a person with a normal cornea, the lens of the eye is smooth and has a perfect curve. On the other hand, a person suffering from astigmatism may have a defective or abnormal curvature in the cornea.

In the presence of a refractive cornea, there is difficulty in looking at objects and identifying them clearly because these objects all seem blurred. The light that falls is not refracted as it should be because of the abnormal cornea and so the image of the objects that are recognized by the retina is blurred. This blurred vision that people with astigmatism suffer from can be corrected by certain simple methods.

Though few people try to correct the blurred vision with contact lenses, many people prefer the Laser surgeries that help to correct the eye defect completely. In case of contact lenses, you will have to repeatedly change the lens and also clean it and maintain it. On the other hand, the Laser surgery is a onetime treatment and once it is completed, you need not worry about the astigmatism at all.

There are commonly three different kinds of Laser surgeries that are performed to correct the astigmatism. One of these is the LASIK surgery that is the most popular treatment available. In this surgery, a precision surgical blade called as the microkeratome is used to make the incision and the cornea is accessed through this incision. The LASER is used to then smoothen the cornea and restore it to its normal smooth surface. This causes the refraction error to be corrected and normal vision is restored to the affected eye. As in any eye surgery, antibiotic drops are prescribed for you to prevent infection of the operated eye.

Other than the LASIK surgery, LASEK surgery is also commonly performed for the correction of astigmatism. The difference is that in this surgery, the epithelial layer of the cornea is also preserve, but otherwise, the correction of the refractive error is the same as LASIK surgery where the cornea is reshaped to make it smooth.

The other common Laser eye surgery for astigmatism is the PRK or Photorefractive Keratectomy, which is also done using Laser. The outer surface of the cornea known as the epithelium is removed in this procedure and the surface of the cornea is corrected.

There are also other lesser common kinds of Laser surgeries that are done in conditions when there is severe astigmatism. One of the procedures that are done when the refractive error is very high is the Laser surgery known as the wavefront. This is not commonly used to treat astigmatism because of the very high cost of the surgical procedure. Though this is a very expensive procedure, the precision is very high and the procedure is also very effective in treating astigmatism.

Question by tigerlily: Can a rhinoplasty be used to narrow the bridge of your nose?
I just hate my nose, the tip is fine and so is the profile but my bridge is horribly wide. So, I was wondering if this could be fixed with rhinoplasty? Thank you.
